Apple CDMA iPhone 4 rumor given new wings thumbnail

With the iPad unicorn now slain, what other beast can DigiTimes shackle its rumor mongering machine to? How about Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology (and inspiration for the ASUS company name), galloping forth with promises of a CDMA iPhone . According to the Taiwanese rumor rag, Pegatron (ASUStek’s OEM manufacturing arm) will begin shipping a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 from its Shanghai plants to Apple in Q4.

Garmin-Asus planning another nuvifone for AT&T?

Garmin-Asus planning another nuvifone for AT&T? thumbnail

It takes a little bit of creative dot-connecting to follow our thought process here — but we think we’re onto something, so do us a favor and lend us an ear for a second. Garmin-Asus , of course, kicked off its North American efforts with the forgettable nuvifone G60 on AT&T, then just followed it up with the Garminfone on T-Mobile. We’d speculated previously that AT&T might have some sort of US exclusive on the use of the “nuvifone” name, considering that the company strays from that branding in no other market in the world. Additionally, all of ASUS’ phones are happening through the Garmin-Asus joint venture right now, so when we found this E600 “PDA Phone” in the FCC this week, we knew right away that we were likely looking at a new nuvifone model. Looking at the filings, we see that it’s rocking 850 / 1900MHz 3G, which leads us to believe that AT&T might be ready for round two — either that, or one of our GSM friends north of the border is looking to deploy it — but any way you slice it, that G60 is looking pretty long in the tooth

T-Mobile Garminfone now on sale, price still boggles the mind thumbnail

As promised , T-Mobile has brought the Garminfone to retail today for $199 after $50 rebate on a new two-year contract, calling into question the viability of selling a nav-centric Android device with an HVGA display, 3 megapixel camera, and no 3.5mm headphone jack for $250 out of pocket in the store. We suppose the awesome car dock will attract some, but the myTouch 3G Slide certainly seems like the better option for less money — maybe this would work at $99 or $149, we suppose. Not that we’re impatient or anything, but where’s our Froyo update, Garmin? Garmin-Asus nuvifone M10 gets handled, reviewed in the wilds of Russia thumbnail

We just heard about Garmin-Asus’ WinMo 6.5.3-packin’ M10 yesterday, and already the handset has been broken out for a photo shoot and hands-on review in Russia. The design itself isn’t anything otherworldly, but we have to say — we’re kind of digging the user interface. Granted, we’ve a soft spot in our hearts for Garmin’s nuvi line of PNDs, so anything remotely familiar gets a big thumbs-up ’round these parts. At any rate, critics noted that the phone was a pleasant mix of WinMo and nuvi, which is something that really sets it apart from other Windows Mobile-based offerings. There’s nary a mention of exactly how awesome this thing would be with Windows Mobile 7 , but if you’re in no hurry to ponder the next big thing, give that source link a look

Garmin-Asus nuvifone A50 runs Android, knows where you are turn-by-turn thumbnail

The long rumored Nuvifone jump to Android is here just as we get set to kick off Mobile World Congress next week. Garmin and ASUS claim that the A50 brings “more location technology than any other smartphone” with a plethora of location-aware apps making use of a highly sensitive (though unnamed) GPS receiver. Spec-wise, the A50 packs a 3.5-inch HVGA (that’s 480×320 pixels, presumably) capacitive touchscreen with custom, finger-friendly UI, 4GB of internal storage with microSD expansion, and accelerometer for the usual portrait to landscape mode flip. The A50 uses satellite, network-based, and terrestrial sources to quickly zero in on your location and comes pre-loaded with Garmin turn-by-turn navigation, lane assist with junction view, and maps — no need to download them over the network (and risk data dead spots), eh Google.

Garmin-Asus taking wraps off first Android gear, M10 WinMo phone at MWC thumbnail

It might be happening a little later than they’d originally hoped , but Garmin — through its partnership in Garmin-Asus — should finally be unveiling some Android-based phones pretty shortly in an effort to kickstart the firm’s weak showing thus far in the dog-eat-dog handset world. The VP of the mobile device business over at ASUS is talking up the joint venture’s 2010 plans this week, saying that it’ll show its first Android product at MWC next month with the hope of striking a pretty even balance between Android and WinMo shipments in the long term (no mention of the G60′s proprietary platform, interestingly). What’s more, they want to push a solid million units this year, and they’ll be looking to reach that goal by building somewhere between 4 and 5 models — at least one of which is likely destined for T-Mobile USA , as far as we can tell.

Acer, Asustek working on custom 3G phones for China? thumbnail

If the sources that Digitimes is reporting are correct, then China can expect to see a few more customized, 3G phones in the coming year. The sources are saying that both Acer and Asustek are planning models for 2010, and that Acer is working with China Mobile and China Unicom to produce TD-SCDMA and WCDMA models while Asustek is reportedly set to release a China-specific Garmin-Asus branded handset for both carriers in 2010 as well. Now, keep in mind of course that none of this has been confirmed by either company as of yet, but the move certainly wouldn’t surprise us, either. ASUS Maximus III Extreme mobo lets Bluetooth cellphones tweak settings thumbnail

ASUS has been giving its motherboard owners ways to tinker with their wares for years now, but it sounds like things are about to get seriously amped up with the Maximus III Extreme. The P55-based board, which falls into the growing Republic of Gamers lineup, adds a new feature to the existing ROG Connect overclocking system: Bluetooth control. You heard right — ASUS claims that this mainboard actually “enables users to tweak system settings wirelessly over Bluetooth via a mobile phone.” More specifically, RC Bluetooth allows users to “review the status of their systems’ hardware and tweak parameters wirelessly from a Bluetooth-enabled PDA phone,” with examples like controlling music playback and dealing with Skype conversations given. There’s no specific mention of a price or release date, but you can bet we’ll be digging for specifics on the limits and functionality baked in here. Garmin-ASUS nuvifone M20 makes jump to Windows Mobile 6.5 thumbnail

Filed under: Handsets , Software , ASUS , Windows Mobile Two years ago , the idea of a Garmin-developed smartphone running the latest Windows Mobile operating system was enough to generate spasms of anticipation across the internets. Oh how things have changed . Today the Garmin-ASUS team has announced a Windows Mobile 6.5 update for M20 owners currently stuck at 6.1. It’s also expanding the M20 theater of pain to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Czech, Turkey, and other markets by the end of 2009 — note the omission of North American and Western European countries. Fine by us, we’re perfectly happy to wait for the revamped Android handset running Google’s turn-by-turn Navigator..

ASUS Android smartphone unveiling to be ‘this year’ thumbnail

Filed under: Handsets , ASUS , Android It’s short and sweet but we thought you’d like to hear the good news doled out by ASUS chairman Jonney Shih and CEO Jerry Shen at a local press meeting in Taiwan today. Shih says that the company’s first Android phone will be “unveiled this year,” not next as originally rumored . For a second, it makes you wonder what’s going to happen to the OS underpinning the ASUS-Garmin nuvifone G60 — then you remember that you weren’t going to buy that phone anyway.
